📜 Daily Dose: Donut History & Trivia
History Highlight
Born in the Trenches of WWI
National Donut Day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army to honor the "Donut Lassies." These brave female volunteers served fresh donuts to U.S. soldiers on the front lines of World War I to boost morale.
Ingenious Baking
Frying in Helmets
Resources were so scarce near the front lines that the "Donut Lassies" often had to improvise, famously frying the donuts (only seven at a time!) in oil using the soldiers' metal helmets as makeshift fryers.
Nomenclature History
"Doughboys" and "Donut Lassies"
The soldiers who received the donuts were nicknamed "Doughboys," and the women who served them were called "Donut Lassies." This connection helped popularize the donut across the U.S. when the troops returned home.
Fun Trivia
The Hole Question
The legend of the center hole is attributed to a 16-year-old American named Hanson Gregory in 1847, who supposedly suggested punching the center out to ensure the dough cooked evenly all the way through.
Actionable Focus: How You Can Celebrate National Donut Day!
- Support the Mission: The day was founded by The Salvation Army. Consider making a small donation or volunteering to support their ongoing community services.
- Go Local and Get Free: Many national and local donut shops give out a free donut on this day! Plan a route for a "Donut Hop" to support multiple small bakeries.
- The World Tour: Try a global variant! Seek out a cruller (French/Dutch twist), pączki (Polish filled donut), or a malasada (Portuguese donut) to expand your horizons.
- Thank a Veteran: Since the day honors military service, use the occasion to thank a veteran in your life for their service and sacrifice.
