1790
The Residence Act establishes the District of Columbia as the United States' capital.
1912
The Dixie cup is patented. Attorney Lawrence W. Luellen of Newton, Massachusetts originally designed the paper cup in 1908 to use with his water dispensing machine. He partnered with Hugh Moore of the American Water Supply Company and set out to change the world's water drinking habits. Instead of sharing drinking glasses and communal drinking tins, the partners suggested their product stopped the spread of germs by being a single-use, disposable drinking vessel.
1935
Oklahoma City installs the world's first parking meter. Carl Magee received patent no. 2,118,318 for his invention and initially trademarked it as the "Dual." However, Magee would later rename the invention the "Park-O-Meter."
1941
Joe DiMaggio broke his own consecutive game hitting streak when he hit his 56th. The Yankee began and ended the streak against pitcher Eddie Smith of the Chicago White Sox. The phenomenal streak ended on July 17th against the Cleveland Indians and pitcher Al Smith. No one has repeated the feat or broken it since.

Little, Brown and Company publishes J.D. Salinger's coming-of-age novel, Catcher in the Rye.
1969
Can you say, "Count down?" The Apollo 11 mission launches from Kennedy Space Center. Four days later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first humans to walk on the Moon. Pilot Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command Module.

Orville Redenbacher - 1907
The bow tie-wearing food scientist developed his own brand of popping corn alongside his business partner Charles Bowman. The famous brand was originally named Red Bow in 1970, but was soon changed to Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn.
Will Ferrell - 1967
The American actor and comedian rose through the ranks of Saturday Night Live to the big screen in comedies like Zoolander, Elf and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
