May 19, 2025 – This day marks the first annual National Roadie Day, a celebration dedicated to the tireless and talented individuals who work behind the scenes to bring live music to life. This special day not only honors all roadies but also celebrates the 100th birthday of Benjamin Holiday Dorcy III, affectionately known as "Lovey," the "King of the Roadies."
Roadies are the backbone of the live music industry, often working 12–18 hours a day to ensure the show goes on. From loading in equipment early in the morning to packing it up after the encore, roadies carry the weight of the show on their shoulders. Their dedication, skill, and perseverance keep the music alive from town to town, night after night.
Celebrating the Legacy of Ben H. Dorcy III
Benjamin Holiday Dorcy III, widely regarded as the first-ever roadie, was born on May 19, 1925. Known for his work with legendary artists such as Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings, Lovey's storied career paved the way for generations of road crew members. His remarkable life and contributions are the focus of the upcoming documentary Willie Nelson Presents: King of the Roadies, premiering at the Dallas International Film Festival. A tribute album from Luna Wolf Records, featuring an all-star lineup, will also honor Lovey and the roadie spirit.
