FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
National Future Generations Day to be Celebrated on the third Friday in March (March 21, 2025). An annual observance focusing on actions taken today that will impact the health and well-being of generations to come.
Mandan, ND - The third Friday in March marks National Future Generations Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about how our current choices and actions impact the health and well-being of future generations. This year's observance falls on March 21, 2025, inviting individuals, organizations, and communities to reflect on their responsibility to create a sustainable and healthy world for those yet to come.
National Future Generations Day, officially recognized by the National Day Calendar, emphasizes preventive healthcare and social responsibility. The day serves as a reminder that our decisions acted on today have lasting effects that can span multiple generations.
"Generational change is a hopeful vision of what can happen if we take action now. And who wouldn't want to give future generations a chance to live healthier, fuller lives, with fewer doctor's appointments along the way?" says Dr. Kent Thornburg, a pioneering researcher in the field of epigenetics at The Moore Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).
Dr. Thornburg's groundbreaking research, along with that of Dr. Tessa Roseboom from the Netherlands, demonstrates that the experiences of one generation can profoundly affect the health of the next. Their studies suggest that with committed action, many chronic diseases could potentially be eliminated within three generations.
Dr. Roseboom, recently appointed as Commissioner of Future Generations at her hospital in Amsterdam, has conducted pivotal research on the Dutch Hunger Winter that revealed the long-term health effects of prenatal malnutrition. Her work underscores the importance of translating scientific insights into actionable health policies.
The public is encouraged to participate in National Future Generations Day by:
- Making healthier dietary choices.
- Watching the documentary "The 100 Year Effect" to learn about the importance of societal change.
- Facilitating group discussions about sustainable practices and healthy lifestyle choices.
- Joining the global movement to safeguard the health of future generations.
- Sharing ideas on social media using the hashtag #FutureGenerationsDay.
"Today, we ask everyone to hit pause, reflect, and ask ourselves, 'What are we really doing for the people who will live in the world we leave behind?'" National Day Calendar.
