April 1 also happens to be the birthday of Tom Foolery, a character developed by Kalahari Resorts, home to America's largest indoor waterparks. This is no April Fool's joke! They included Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. Of the seven, Alan Shepard would be the first American in space. John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. Gus Grissom would die tragically with two other astronauts (Ed White and Roger Chaffee) when a fire erupted during a pre-launch test for the first manned Apollo 1 flight. They were the first casualties of the NASA space program.   1970 American Motors releases the first Gremlin off the assembly line.   1978 Australian millionaire Dick Smith towed what appeared to be a giant iceberg into Sydney Harbor. It was an accomplishment he had been promising to do for months and now he had. It was also time to chip off chunks and fill everyone's drinks. Well, until his prank was revealed by a sudden rain that washed away fire suppression foam and shaving foam showing a small wooden mountain draped with plastic sheeting loaded on the barge.   1996 The Taco Liberty Bell and other patriotic businesses wipe out National Debt. Or that's what the headlines would have read if their April Fool's prank had gotten carried away. Their full-page ads informed the public that the fast-food chain had purchased the national treasure to offset our nation's debt and encouraged other businesses to do the same.   2019 National Day Calendar releases an article about the successful production of yolkless eggs.   April 1st Celebrated History   Sergei Rachmaninoff - 1873 The Russian pianist and composer produced immensely moving music like his 1901 Piano Concerto No. 2. In 1917, the Russian Revolution drove him and his family out of the country. He eventually settled in the United States where he continued playing and composing until his death in 1948.   Lon Chaney - 1883 Known as the "Man of a Thousand Faces," Lon Chaney literally transformed how we perceive cinema. The actor, make-up artist, and director's pioneering work set the stage for magnificent and compelling artistry and technique. Chaney's influence is still felt throughout the industry today.   Florence Blanchfield - 1884 Florence Blanchfield was the first Army nurse to be granted a regular Army commission. She joined in 1917 and served during World Wars I and II. Her efforts brought about equality in pay and rank to women in the Army and Navy.   Alberta Hunter - 1895 The internationally known jazz and blues singer hung up her microphone in 1954 and pursued a career in practical nursing. Following graduation, Hunter continued her nursing career until 1977 when she picked up her microphone once more.   Anne McCaffrey - 1926 The American Irish writer is best known for her science fiction work, especially her Dragonriders of Pern series. She is a science fiction writer of firsts, becoming the first woman to win both the Hugo Award (1968) and the Nebula Award (1969). Electricians install four of Charles F. Brush's 3,000 candlepower lamps atop the courthouse. Once lit they cast a brilliant glow across the city. Because of this, Wabash lays claim to being the first in the world to be entirely lit with electric light. However, historians find the use of the word "first" to lack authenticity or accuracy.   1943 Oklahoma! opens on Broadway. The Rogers and Hammerstein production would run for five years and although it won no awards (none existed at the time) the show was a critical and popular success.   1918 The first daylight saving time begins in the United States. This is where the madness started.   March 31st Celebrated Birthdays   Robert Wilhelm Eberhard von Bunsen - 1811 In 1855, the German chemist introduced the single flame open gas burner commonly used for heating, sterilizing, and combustion in laboratories.   Octavio Paz - 1914  The Mexican poet and author of the essay The Labyrinth of Solitude gained worldwide acclaim for his literature. Throughout his lifetime, his literary prowess has been recognized, most notably with the 1977 National Prize for Arts and Literature in Linguistics and Literature, the 1981 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the 1982 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and the 1990 Nobel Prize.   Gordie Howe - 1928 The ambidextrous right wing played a phenomenal 26 seasons in the National Hockey League. In 1973, Howe signed a contract to play for the World Hockey League continuing his professional career another seven years. During his entire career, Howe's performance logged records that in some cases remain unbroken. He is considered one of the NHL's 100 Greatest NHL Players and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.   Cesar Chavez - 1927 A former migrant farmworker, Cesar Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association. The organization would later become the United Farm Workers of America and under Chavez's guidance, it would gain higher wages and benefits for workers.   Liz Claiborne - 1929 The pioneering women's fashion designer launched Liz Claiborne, Inc. on January 19, 1976, with Arthur Ortenberg, Leonard Boxer, and Jerome Chazen. Claiborne's designs targeted the business woman's need for easy-wear fashion appropriate for the office.   Herb Alpert - 1935 The award-winning trumpeter co-founded A&M records in the 1960s with Jerry Moss. He was also the leader of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. His foundation established The Herb Alpert Award in the Arts rewarding risk-taking artists in a variety of fields.   Rhea Perlman - 1948 Rhea Perlman is the four-time Emmy-winning actress from the sitcom Cheers. Her previous role was playing opposite Danny DeVito in Taxi.   Angus Young - 1955 In 1973, the energetic guitarist co-founded the Australian rock band AC/DC. Read more...   On Deck for March 31, 2024 National Days EASTER NATIONAL PROM DAY NATIONAL TATER DAY NATIONAL CRAYON DAY NATIONAL CLAMS ON THE HALF SHELL DAY NATIONAL BUNSEN BURNER DAY   March 30th Celebrated History   1858 The United States Patent Office issued the first patent for an eraser attached to the end of a pencil to inventor Hymen Lipman.    1867 Secretary of State William Seward agreed to purchase Alaska from Russia for 7.2 million dollars. The final agreement didn't take place until October, but it would become known as Seward's Folly. Congress and the press didn't see any value in the purchase of a frozen wasteland. Even the chef at Delmonico's in New York poked fun at the Secretary of State and created a dessert in honor of the potential event. Seward would die in 1872, more than two decades before the Alaska Gold Rush and well before Alaska was seen for its more strategic and natural benefits.   1870 President Ulysses S. Grant announces to Congress that the 15th Amendment prohibiting the federal government and states from denying the right to vote to any citizen based on a person's "race, color, or previous condition of servitude," is in effect. The states ratified the amendment on February 3, 1870, granting African American men the right to vote.   1964 Jeopardy! Categories for $200, Alex. Following National Day Calendar will help you answer many questions in this popular category. "What is National Days?" Hosted by Art Flemming, the game show Jeopardy! debuts on NBC. The Merv Griffin creation broadcast until January 3, 1975. Following syndication, it was revived as the short-lived The All-New Jeopardy! In 1984, it once more made a revival and is still going strong. On November 8, 2020, the show's beloved host, Alex Trebek died from pancreatic cancer. He hosted the show for 37 years.   1981 John W. Hinckley Jr. shoots and seriously injures President Ronald Reagan outside a Washington, D.C., hotel. Press secretary James Brady, a Secret Service agent, and a D.C. police officer are also wounded.   March 30th Celebrated Birthdays   Anna Sewell - 1820 While the author wrote several books during her career, she's best known for the novel Black Beauty.   Vincent van Gogh - 1853 The Dutch post-impressionist painter brought the world some of the most influential oil paintings. Included in his collected works are "The Starry Night," "Water Lily," and "Sunflowers."   Mary Whiton Calkins - 1863 In 1896, after completing all the requirements, Calkins was denied a doctorate degree in psychology from Harvard University solely on the basis of her gender. She became the first female president of the American Psychology Association in 1905.   Arthur Herrington - 1891 The American engineer is best known for developing the Jeep.   Eric Clapton - 1945 The award-winning music artist is best known for his guitar rock and blues performances. A career spanning five decades, from 1970s hits "I Shot the Sheriff" and "Wonderful Tonight" to the 1990s "Tears in Heaven," Clapton's powerful lyrics and guitar solos have moved the world.   MC Hammer - 1962 We can't touch this, but you can. Born Stanley Kirk Burrell, the award-winning American rapper, dancer, and producer rose in popularity during the late 1980s with hits like "U Can't Touch This" and "2 Legit 2 Quit."   Tracy Chapman - 1964 March 30th must be in the stars for music with the third artist born on this day. In 1988, Tracy Chapman's career exploded with three Grammy wins - Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Contemporary Folk Recording. She added another Grammy win in 1996.   Celine Dion - 1968 Adding one more musically talented artist, the Canadian singer's four decades of powerful ballads and moving pop songs have garnered her 16 Grammy nominations and 5 wins. While her first Grammy win in 1992 was for her duet of "Beauty and the Beast" with Bryson, her first album was released in French.
