Written by Mary Shelley, the author's identity isn't revealed until three years later when the second edition is published in Paris.   1892  The first immigrants pass through the doors of the Ellis Island Immigration Station. Ellis Island replaced Castle Garden as the new landing depot for immigrants entering the United States via New York.   1895 Entrepreneur C.W. Post of Battle Creek, Michigan introduces Postum Food Coffee. The Coffee substitute is made from wheat, bran, and molasses. Three years later he introduces Post Grape-Nuts cereal.   1939 The Hewlett Packard Company is founded in a garage in Palo Alto, CA by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard.   1990 David Dinkins takes the oath of office becoming New York City's first Black mayor.   1992 The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) mandated hospitals to include no-smoking policies indoors or risk losing accreditation. Loss of accreditations places hospitals at risk of losing Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.   January 1st Celebrated Birthdays   Paul Revere - 1735 The American patriot is best known for his midnight ride to alert other patriots of British troops. However, a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow leaves out a few names, including William Dawes, Samuel Prescott, Israel Bissell and possibly one other. The last one, Sybil Ludington, leaves some doubt in the mind of historians as no record of her ride exists until much later.   Benjamin Leroy Holt - 1849 The younger brother of the founder of Holt Brothers Company, Benjamin Holt invented the first tractor to use tracks instead of wheels.   William Fox - 1879 In 1915, Fox founded the Fox Film Corporation. He would later establish the Fox West Coast Theatres chain.   Noor Inayat Khan -1914 After joining the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) during World War II, Khan was recruited as a Special Operations Executive (SOE) to be a radio operator for the resistance network in occupied Paris. Her mission was to send coded messages back to London. In 1943, the Germans captured her, and they later executed her.   J.D. Salinger - 1919 The American author is best known for the coming of age story The Catcher in the Rye.   James Sinegal - 1936 In 1983, the American businessman founded the warehouse retail chain Costco Wholesale Corporation.   Happy New Year! In August, New York City Mayor George McClellan renamed the area Times Square. The newspaper ushered in 1905 with the first New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square.   1911 Marie Curie receives her second Nobel Prize. Her work with radioactivity led to the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.   1983 Mayor Ed Koch appoints Benjamin Ward as New York City Police Commissioner, the first African American to hold the position.   1999  Complying with the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties, the U.S. government transfers control of the Panama Canal to Panama.   2000 Last day of century and the second millennium.   December 31st Celebrated Birthdays    Elizabeth Arden - 1878 Born Florence Nightingale Graham, the entrepreneur opened her first cosmetics salon in 1910 on Fifth Avenue in New York City.   Anthony Hopkins - 1937 The award-winning actor is best-known for his unforgettable role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Other memorable performances include Remains of the Day, Legends of the Fall, and Nixon.   Rosalind Cash - 1938 Throughout the actress's more than 30 year career she appeared in many popular television series including Barney Miller, Kojak, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, American Playhouse, Hill Street Blues, The Cosby Show, L.A. Law, The Golden Girls, Family Ties, China Beach, A Different World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and General Hospital. He also scored the Cup-winning goal leading Montreal over Winnipeg 6-5.   1936 At the General Motors Fisher Body Plant Number One in Flint, Michigan, 136,000 union workers stage the first United Auto Workers union sit-down strike.   1980 According to a United Press International report a letter arrived at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA addressed to Michael M. Mouse from "The Office of the Director, Selective Service System." The letter reminded Mickey Mouse that he was in danger of becoming a draft dodger if he didn't comply with the Military Selective Service Act and provided the requested information. According to the article, a Disney spokesperson said, "We'll notify them that at 52 he's well over the draft age. And Besides, he's a World War II veteran. I suppose we'll also have to point out he's only a cartoon character."   December 30th Celebrated Birthdays    Asa Griggs Candler - 1851 In 1877, Chandler purchased the formula for Coca-Cola from John S. Pemberton. Under Chandler's stewardship, the soft drink became a household name with a trademarked bottle.   John N. Bahcall - 1934 The Princeton astrophysicist and astronomer made several contributions to science including award-winning work developing the Hubble Space Telescope.   Tiger Woods - 1975 The professional American golfer is tied with Sam Snead as the winningest PGA golfer at 82 wins. In 2001, Woods became the first player to consecutively win all four major golf tournaments.
